Yamaha RX-V667: Flair and Function

yamaha rx-v667A home theater system needs a budget-friendly AV receiver that doesn’t scrimp on its features. This is a fairly hard find given the many competing brands out there. Great care must be taken not to purchase an expensive and flashy product that doesn’t live up to its price, and a superior alternative at half the cost may be overlooked if we give in to haste and buying impulse.

Since I’ve always considered AV receivers as mini command centers that centralize all other home theater devices, I thought long and hard before purchasing the Yamaha RX-V667. The mid-range budget price of $370 for a high-end system that claims to offer 6 HDMI inputs, high-def audio decoding, seven channels of surround sound, and a whole slew of other elements sounded too good to be true. However, since the RX-V667 looked like it could deliver its promises, I took a chance and bought it. I’m glad I did. This system is absolutely superb.

Video Quality

The RX-V667 renders impressive picture quality with its 30/36 bit deep color transmission, full 1080p HD up-scaling, excellent video processing, and 24Hz refresh rate. Its graphical user interface is impressively top notch in terms of speed, ease of use, and design.

The six HDMI and two analog video inputs gave me all the options I could possibly have in terms of connectivity. Whether it’s my satellite box, game console, or Blu-ray player, it is capable of providing the necessary high definition video quality needed to make the experience complete.

Price

The RX-V667 comes in at around $300-$600. From the sheer amount of options this device has to offer, the price tag is well worth it. Scouring around the net led me to believe that it is even cheaper compared to other high-end brands out there that contain less features. Shipping usually falls within one to two days, and when I took this 23 pound, 17.5 x 21 x 8.9 inch awesome apparatus out of its box, I felt like I was opening a Christmas present.

The device comes with up to date sound decoders, amp configuration to decrease audio interference, and Cinema DSP feature for realistic surround sound.

Other features include:

  • YPAO system that automatically calibrates the speakers and sets the sound according to the room acoustics.

Yamaha RX-V667 Design

The RX-V667 exhibits the same black brush and metal finish design of earlier Yamaha models. It has an extremely solid build and elegant layout, making it fit in gracefully with other sleek styled home theater equipment.

The top half has the rectangular LCD display window and an array of buttons arranged in neat order. The volume knob is at the lower right next to the video, audio, and a conveniently placed HDMI input jack. The power button is placed on the top left corner next to the mic jack, with the headphone jack directly below it. Overall, the front design is simply beautiful. If you want a receiver with a little panache, then the RX-V667 will suit you just fine.

The same can’t be said for the remote though, as it looks quite common and disorganized with the sheer host of buttons littered on it. Much of them have the same small, rectangular shapes that make it hard for pudgy fingers like mine to accurately press. It’s way too cluttered for my taste. However, the functionality it offers is fantastic once you get the hang of it.

Other Features

There are four SCENE buttons that correspond with preset DVD viewing, disc listening, TV viewing, and radio listening processes that allow you to quickly initiate the sequence with a single press. The wonderful thing is that the default SCENE buttons can be changed to suit your own preferences, giving you more efficiency and saving you from having to set up the device repeatedly.

Conclusion

Overall, the Yamaha RX-V667 is a receiver that brought out the best in my home theater system. The aspects I mentioned are simply to minimal to do justice to the Yamaha RX-V667 with its plethora of other functions, explained in more detail in the user manual. Since buying it, it has given me the satisfying feeling of owning one of the best receivers in the market. It was a wise purchase, and I haven’t looked back ever since.
